Social Enterprise Day 2017

Social Enterprise Day 2017

It’s national social enterprise day today, and as a social enterprise business ourselves, we would love to explore and share our knowledge with you for you to gain a real understanding of what a social enterprise business is, and how being one is so different to any other type of business.

So let’s start from the start shall we? What is a social enterprise? A social enterprise is a business with social objectives. Profits which are made within the business are reinvested within the business or in some cases to the community. Many of the social enterprise businesses compete in the marketplace like other businesses and social enterprises must sustain their businesses and make a profit like any other business.

Social enterprises come in all shapes and sizes. We have great examples of social enterprises here within the Conwy County, which include Catrefi Conwy, Creating Enterprise and more locally to Llanrwst, Golygfa Gwydyr. Glasdir, for example, is a small social enterprise, with only 6 staff working here, then you have the likes of Dŵr Cymru who employ thousands across Wales. Dŵr Cymru is now the 4th largest company in Wales and supplies up to 828 litres of water a day! That’s a lot of water!! Dŵr Cymru are all about helping the environment and improving the water supplies to sustain healthy running water to over 3 million people across Wales. All profits are pumped back into the system to maintain and build up reserves to insulate water to its customers. This is what makes Dŵr Cymru one of Wales’s most successful social enterprises.

Moving back to Glasdir, I’m sure many of you are starting to wonder what makes us a social enterprise. Glasdir is actually an award winning Social Enterprise here in Llanrwst, North Wales. Our not-for-profit status means that we can offer flexible and affordable packages to meet every budget, and you can be sure that every penny goes back into improving the facilities here at Glasdir and locally in our surrounding areas.

Leading on from Glasdir giving back to the community, this is where Glasdir Skills Academy was born. As a business and conference centre, three years ago, Glasdir saw an opportunity to run courses to local individuals and businesses at an affordable cost. Glasdir Skills Academy has proven very popular, with a wide range of courses on offer from Food Safety in Catering to Facebook for Business courses.

A social enterprise business isn’t as new as it sounds either, did you know a social enterprise business travels back as far as 1840? It was in fact where a workers’ co-operative was set up to provide high-quality affordable food in response to factory conditions that were considered to be exploitative.

After reading this short introduction to social enterprise, you might be thinking a social enterprise business could be for you? Or you might be interested in finding out more about it. There are many different organisations out there that can help you along the way, some of which are Social Business Wales, The Wales Co-Operative and Social Enterprise UK to name a few. Check them out to find out more, you never know where it could lead you.
